The Next Speaker-Manufacturing Mecca is . . . Cali, Colombia?
Jan 5 – China could be in for some competition as the loudspeaker manufacturing capital of the world. I know someone in the industry who owns a 200-employee factory in China (which makes cabinets for many familiar brands) and is now building a new factory in Cali, Colombia, of all places. You’ve probably heard of Cali as the home of the Cali Cartel, the cocaine empire based in that city.
But why Cali? According to my contact, speaker cabinets can be made better and cheaper in Cali. He also assures me that the city is safe, and that the government is encouraging foreign investment in manufacturing infrastructure.
