David Wilcox has been writing and delivering masterful songs since 1987, when his first album, The Nightshift Watchman, was released. Since then, he has continued to tour the world playing and singing his original creations. His latest release, The Way I Tell the Story, continues his crusade to share his unique musical and philosophical views with the world. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing David Wilcox play live several times while I was the photographer for the Etown syndicated radio show. I also interviewed him and took a portrait photograph for Vintage Guitar several years ago, and while I can’t say I know David Wilcox, from my interactions with him, I can say he is as consistent and genuine as any musician I’ve ever met, and his music reflects this high level of authenticity and personal commitment. The album was produced by Michael Selverne, and the core band for the project includes Jeff Pevar, Philippe Saisse, Bashiri Johnson, Bill Berg, Michael Beardeon, and Al Carty. The Way I Tell the Story is available on CD and in digital form. I listened to the 96/24 version on Qobuz, and it is hard to fault for overall sound. The recording is harmonically lush without sounding cloying. It has the sort of sonic palette you can relax into.
