The Heavy Hitters is an eponymously titled album that’s co-led by pianist Mike LeDonne and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, who are long-term friends and frequent collaborators. For this session they gathered together other frequent collaborators in the form of alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kenny Washington. All of these musicians are highly accomplished players on their respective instruments. The session has a definite Blue Note vibe. It was recorded at Van Gelder Studio, where most of the best-known albums on that label were put to tape, and that point wasn’t lost on these musicians, as they welcomed an opportunity to work in a studio famous for capturing “a true jazz sound.” Three of LeDonne’s compositions were inspired by musicians who recorded on Blue Note. The up-tempo opener “Hub” is dedicated to Freddie Hubbard, the finger-popping “Silverlight” is dedicated to Horace Silver, and the hard swinger “Cedar Land” is based on Cedar Walton’s “Holy Land.” Other musical highlights include the medium waltz “New Day” and the funky blues “Chainsaw,” which features a guest appearance by guitarist Rale Micic. The title of this album couldn’t be more appropriate, as these musicians definitely are heavy hitters.
