“Welcome to cyber-space, I’m lost in a fog/Everything’s digital, I’m still analog” proclaims Joe Walsh in “Analog Man,” the title track of his first solo release in nearly twenty years. He’s toying with us, of course; any album co-produced with Jeff Lynne (ELO, Traveling Wilburys) is destined to have plenty of Pro Tools tweaking, production tricks, and overcompressed sound. In his reedy, sardonic, and sometimes goofy way Walsh reveals that he’s happy (“Lucky That Way”), healthy and sober for 18 years (“One Day At A Time”), and very much in love (“Family”). But don’t think he’s gone all mushy on us—there are still plenty of his signature funky riffs mixed in with his life stories and social commentary. Cuts like “Funk 50,” which harkens back to his days with James Gang, and “India,” where Walsh adds guitar to a Bollywood-style dance club track, are the most inventive. The old dog may be on the porch more these days instead of running wild, but he’s still got some bite in him. Guest artists include brother- in-law Ringo Starr, Graham Nash, and David Crosby, and Little Richard, who appears on one of the two tracks on the deluxe version.
