Dallas Green, the chameleon-like Canadian artist who works under the pseudonym City and Colour, steps further away from the career-defining acoustic folk of 2008’s Bring Me Your Love with an album of soulful ballads and swirling electric textures. He surprised many with the 2014 hit duo You + Me, which teamed him with Pink— after all, Green rose out of the post- hardcore band Alexisonfire—yet it’s not surprising to find that this ongoing side project provides a platform for bold experimental pop that showcases Green’s songwriting talents and his rich tenor. On his website, he has characterized this album as “a last-ditch effort to find something better and leave well enough alone.” The atmospheric nine-minute opening track “Woman” and the ballad “Killing Time” are darker and more personal than on past recordings. The mood brightens on “Map of the World,” and the confessional “Friends” features Green wearing his heart on his sleeve and adding pedal-steel to his vibrant sonic palette. On the closing track, the haunting acoustic ballad “Blood,” Green reflects candidly on the emotional toll exacted by the troubadour’s life and celebrates the joy he’s found along the way. It’s one of the year’s most beautiful ballads.
