After a seven-year hiatus from recording, Bonnie Raitt is back with a bluesy, soulful album that’s sure to make her fans fall in love with her all over again. Raitt has always had great taste in choosing songs, and her selections for Slipstream won’t disappoint. The eight tracks she produced herself are “classic Bonnie,” with up-tempo tunes, heartrending ballads, plenty of guitar jams featuring her signature slide playing, and that husky, smoky voice that she wraps around a lyric like no one else. A reggae take on Gerry Rafferty’s “Right Down The Line” is an unexpected but pleasant surprise, and the funky opening to “Ain’t Gonna Let You Go” shows why B. B. King proclaimed Raitt to be his favorite slide guitar player. The four remaining tracks, culled from experimental sessions with producer Joe Henry that jumpstarted this project, include a couple of covers dug deep from Bob Dylan’s Time Out Of Mind (“Million Miles” and “Standing in the Doorway”). Also of particular note are two sensual, open-hearted ballads: “You Can’t Fail Me Now” (co-written by Henry and Loudon Wainwright III) and “Not Cause I Wanted To.” Sonics are ungimmicky, uncrowded, and clear as a bell.
